Choosing a laptop stand: height, angle, and the size question

Choosing a laptop stand: height, angle, and the size question

A laptop stand is bought to fix one thing: you are looking down at your screen all day. Whether it actually fixes it comes down to three decisions.

1. How high does it need to go?

The target is the top of the screen roughly level with your eyes when you are sitting upright. For most people at a standard desk that means raising a laptop by 10-15 cm. A stand that tops out at 7 cm is a wrist-angle improvement, not a neck one.

Check the maximum height, not the number of levels. A seven-level stand whose top level is 9 cm is worse for your neck than a three-level stand that reaches 15 cm.

2. Will you type on the laptop keyboard?

This is the decision people skip. If the screen is at eye level, the built-in keyboard is now too high to type on comfortably, so you need an external keyboard. If you do not want a second keyboard, you want a low-angle stand that tilts the laptop rather than lifting it — better wrists, roughly unchanged neck.

You cannot have both from one stand. Decide which problem you are solving.

3. Does it fit your machine?

Two numbers matter. Screen size tells you whether the laptop sits within the arms — most stands quote a range such as 11-17 inches. Weight capacity matters if you use a 16-inch machine, which can approach 2 kg and will make a flimsy stand flex when you tap the screen.

Folding versus fixed

A folding stand that collapses to about 2 cm goes in a bag. A fixed stand is more rigid and quicker to use. If it lives on one desk, fixed is better; if it travels, folding is the whole point.

What does not matter much

Aluminium versus alloy, at this end of the market, is mostly a marketing distinction. Ventilation cut-outs help a little under sustained load and not at all for ordinary work. Colour is colour.

Every stand in Stands & Holders lists its height range, supported screen sizes and folded dimensions. If you tell us your laptop and your desk height at contact@cozyn.store, we will tell you which one clears eye level.
